As an online developer and consultant, I’m continuously learning new skills. Skillshare Logo… to keep up with the trade and make customers pleased. To do so, I’ve relied heavily on online learning over the past five years. Normally, when I want to discover something brand-new, I just go to YouTube and enter a concern and wish for the best.
The majority of the time, I get videos taught by “professionals” with unlimited ad breaks and pitches to purchase their product. I suggest, what else can you expect from “free courses.” Recently, fed up with the poor quality and questionable understanding shared on free platforms, I relied on an online learning platform I keep hearing so much about: Skillshare.
Impressed by Skillshare’s high-quality totally free classes, I signed up for an annual subscription (and scored a 40% discount rate, more on that in the Skillshare rates area) and dove deeper into the Skillshare courses used to premium members.
I will share my experience as a Skillshare student here in this in-depth evaluation. While some reviews for online courses tend to be regurgitations of sales pages, everything you are about to read comes directly from my own experience as a passionate student.
If you are trying to find a TLDR version of this review, here it is:
The large quantity of new content that is added to the platform weekly is enough to keep even the busiest of brains engaged. Whether you want to get a new ability to make your resume shine, change your home, or master a pastime “just for the hell of it,” you can easily find dozens of opportunities to level up your repertoire. Further, Skillshare’s generous payment plans for teachers means that there’s no shortage of exceptional instructors developing brand-new and high-quality content regularly.
Now, if only there was more time in the day to discover all of it!
Communities of similar students
Feeling part of a peer-group can be hard when you have niche interests like Board Game Design or Floral Embroideries. Between Skillshare’s Groups, Workshops, and differed trainers, you’re opening a bonanza of chance for connection and neighborhood building. This is a big perk for us “nerds” to feel part of something bigger than our own specific efforts AND it permits us to discover not only from the specialists, however from each other.
Easy to use all around
It took me all of 5 minutes to create my account, login, browse for content I have an interest in, and find a course that fit the expense. I was diving deep into my first course in less than 20 minutes, eager to discover much more content to devour.
Kudos to Skillshare for making an easily navigable desktop AND mobile platform, and for consisting of a start/stop performance that syncs across gadgets.
Between the capability to “favorite” fantastic instructors and save Skillshare classes to individualized lists, not to mention the Discovery section of the Skillshare app, I am never for want of brand-new product to learn. And the fact that I get to learn on MY schedule makes Skillshare the equivalent of the 100 emoji.

The Drawbacks (Cons) of Skillshare
These are the primary disadvantages of Skillshare:
Not totally available
Not every instructor ROCKS
The ads are bothersome, so you’ll want to pay
Not completely accessible
As I was evaluating courses and building my Skillshare review, I was constantly dissatisfied by the lack of closed captioning readily available on the videos. This essentially makes the platform impossible to use for those who are hearing not able and impaired to check out lips. Minus points for exclusivity!
Not every teacher ROCKS
The variance in quality of trainers can be a continual challenge on your way to understanding gain. Given that being able to teach effectively is a hard-won skill in it of itself, it would be naive to think that every instructor on the platform stands out at the fundamentals of teaching.
A good quality indicator is the number of students a course has actually hosted, as greater numbers tend to associate with higher quality trainers. However, this isn’t always the case– some courses are just niche enough to not attract the “masses” anyway.
Conclusion: is Skillshare Worth it?
The possibility to find out for knowing’s sake is factor enough for me to peacefully proclaim that Skillshare is worth it. The hands-on tasks and ability to get in touch with others, consisting of professionals in your preferred fields of knowledge, makes the $14 a month charge a bargain. The onus is on YOU to figure out which courses would bring you the most value, whether you aim to reinforce your resume with sparkling competitive skills or assert yourself as a professional enthusiast.
Skillshare members can gain a lot more than simply brand-new skills from the courses. You’ll fall for learning again, meet competent and inspired peers that will challenge and inspire you, and might find yourself addicted (nay, obsessed!) with getting understanding.
